Paul A. Nitz, M.D.
Throughout his professional life, experienced orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Paul A. Nitz has been devoted to the practice of sports medicine.
It began with specialized fellowship training at the Methodist Sports Medicine Center in Indianapolis under the direction of Donald Shelbourne, M.D., team physician for the Indianapolis Colts and orthopaedic consultant to Purdue University.
In 1990, Dr. Nitz began 24 years of service as the orthopedic consultant for Cedarville University, and then in 1992, Dr. Nitz became primary team physician for Central State University’s athletic department. In recognition of his ongoing service, he was elected to the department’s Hall of Fame. He is an honorary member of the Ohio Athletic Training Association, active in the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy Association of North America and team doctor for a number of local high schools. Dr. Nitz also has served on the editorial board for The Physicians and Sports Medicine Journal.
Dr. Paul A Nitz is a skilled orthopaedic surgeon with more than three decades of experience. From the U.S. Army to Central State University athletics, Dr. Nitz has applied his talents to treat knee and shoulder injuries, as well as other complex joint issues. Sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery are two of his specialties. Among other advanced techniques, he provides treatment with the latest musculoskeletal laser technology.
After graduating from the Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Nitz completed his orthopaedic surgical training at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. He received specialized fellowship training in sports medicine at the Methodist Sports Medicine Center in Indianapolis under the direction of Donald Shelbourne, M.D., team physician for the Indianapolis Colts and orthopaedic consultant to Purdue University.
In the Army, Dr. Nitz rose to the rank of Major, and served as staff orthopaedic surgeon and later as chief of orthopaedic surgery at Reynolds Community Hospital in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
Dr. Nitz is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and is a Fellow of the Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is an active member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Dr. Nitz has served on the editorial board for The Physicians and Sports Medicine Journal, and is on the staff at Sycamore Hospital and Greater Dayton Surgery Center and sees patients at various locations in the Dayton area.
Dr. Nitz has years of real-life sports medicine experience. Beginning in 1990, he provided orthopedic consultation for 24 years for Cedarville University’s athletic department. Since 1992, he has been the primary team physician for Central State University’s athletic department. In recognition of his service, he was elected to the Hall of Fame of Central State University’s athletic department. At the same time, Dr. Nitz provided medical/orthopedic care for the Dayton community professional hockey teams, arena football teams and the World Basketball League team. He is also an honorary member of the Ohio Athletic Training Association and has been a team doctor for a number of local high schools. He has provided medical coverage for the Ohio High School State Wrestling Tournament for the past 30 years, as well as years of medical coverage for the high school track and field championships and girls’ volleyball state championships.
